Are you, or someone you know, considering a career in teaching? The 2024 training scholarship applications through TeachNZ opens from September 17 to October 15 2024.
We encourage anyone in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics curriculum areas with at least seven years of relevant employment experience to apply. This scholarship could be a game-changer for those ready to take the leap into teacher training. We also encourage anyone already working in schools with an LAT to apply.
What’s on Offer?
Check out the incredible $30,000 tax-free scholarship, plus an additional $10,000 for course fees. Importantly, 30 of these scholarships are reserved specifically for Secondary Technology teachers from a total of 85 available.
For more details, visit TeachNZ Scholarships.
This scholarship is available to most trainees entering courses in 2025 or those already enrolled in Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programs (note that special conditions apply for those currently in training).
Important Reminder: Don’t wait until you’re accepted into an ITE course to apply. If you miss out on a place in the programme, it will be awarded to the next highest scoring applicant in the selection process.
Additional Pathways for Technology Teachers
For Technology teachers holding Level 4 and above industry qualifications, there are now three providers offering one-year training courses leading to a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning. Additionally, some “Employment while you train” courses allow trainees to teach as LATs while completing their coursework. These typically require a two-year training commitment and may offer funding of up to $15,000 per year plus course fees, although they do not qualify for the full $30,000.
Many of these courses feature a significant online training component, alongside up to 120 days of practical experience in various schools as required by the Teaching Council.
Will Your Work History Count?
Your work history can positively impact your pay scale in teaching! A teacher with a Level 4 qualification earns one pay scale step for every three years of relevant experience. For those with Level 5 and above, each two years of related experience counts for one step up. If you’ve reached the top of the pay scale and hold a Level 5 qualification with 2,000 hours of relevant experience, you may be eligible for the G3+ pay scale step.
Keep an eye out for an upcoming media campaign by TeachNZ promoting these awards on Facebook and TikTok. This is a fantastic opportunity to jumpstart your teaching career!
