The Ministry of Education has launched an initiative to provide free home internet to households with school-age children who do not currently have an internet connection. This initiative covers installation and monthly costs until June 30, 2024, with ongoing plans being developed. The aim is to ensure that all students have access to the internet for continued learning outside of school and to promote digital connectivity for their families.
The Manaiakalani Education Trust is collaborating with the Ministry to disseminate information to schools, housing providers, and social agencies, allowing eligible households to benefit from the program.
To be eligible, a household must have a school-age child (primary, intermediate, or secondary) and no existing home internet connection. Over 1000 schools have been informed about the initiative, and schools can refer eligible households for internet connection. Additionally, families can directly contact the Trust for assistance.
The Trust has established the EDOS team to facilitate the process, including communication with households, arranging internet installation through service providers, and managing direct payments from the Ministry. Furthermore, EDOS operates a support helpdesk to address any inquiries from families.
