The re-indigenisation of Te Ao Maori in Aotearoa through customary and contemporary collections of Maori korowai and kakahu. Customary and contemporary materials, techniques and design used to pass on Mana, promote Tikanga and raise Maori achievement in high school education.
In my community of Hataitai both mine and my students work is displayed and used in many schools. The following schools have been gifted taonga korowai that we have created; Kilbirnie School, Evans Bay Intermediate School, St Catherine’s College, Scots College, St Mary’s College and Wellington East Girls College, Wellington College and Wellington High School. This positive visual representation of Te Ao Maori in my community creates connections and enables my students to see their work and sets the example for those around them. I also present to students and teachers Korero Korowai, what is a Korowai and how has this art form evolved, especially in society’s view. How can we use education to honour the names of our toanga?
