We received some concerns around whether they were required to hold Unit Standard 4098 as a hospitality teacher, so we reached out to Ringa Hora. We are pleased to share their clarification that it is not required for registered teachers.

“As part of the Consent and Moderation Requirements CMR 0112 to assess hospitality (attached) teachers are required to hold unit standard 4098, Use standards to assess candidate performance, or can demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.”

We’ve had some members ask us whether they are required to hold US4098, so we just wanted your clarification on this issue. As part of the “Requirements for Kaiako Whai Rēhitanga | Teacher Registration” you are to hold a New Zealand Initial Teacher Education (ITE) qualification or an equivalent or comparable teacher education qualification from overseas. Therefore to our understanding, any registered teacher as part of their teacher registration, will be meeting above and beyond what US4098 requires, and therefore meet the “can demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills” and thus not be required to hold US4098.

We can see however, there may be a need for it if the school has employed a LAT to teach in this space.

In short, what you have said is correct. While US4098 is nice to have for everyone, registered teachers will be demonstrating equivalent knowledge and skills. Any LATs that are teaching and assessing in the space should however hold US4098.
