We’ve received clarification from the Ministry of Education regarding a key question many of you have raised about the draft Technology learning area for Years 9–10 — specifically around the expectations within the Materials and Processing Technology (MPT) strand at Year 9 and 10.
Te Poutāhū (Curriculum Centre), Ministry of Education has confirmed the following:
In the current draft, schools are required to teach all content within any strand they choose to offer.
If a school selects the MPT strand as one of their two required strands at Years 9–10, the expectation in the draft is that all content within that strand (“Materials technology” , “Hard (resistant) and soft (textiles) engineering”, “Processing technology”, “Food technology”, “Biotechnology”) is to be taught.
The curriculum is still in consultation. Your feedback is critical.
The Ministry emphasised that this is not the final gazetted curriculum.
Feedback gathered now will directly shape what the final requirements look like, including the structure of strands, breadth of content, and what is reasonable for schools to deliver. The Ministry has asked that all specific feedback be submitted through the official online form so that it is captured consistently.
